Hey there, soon-to-be parents! Your big day is approaching, and the excitement is palpable as you're busy rearranging the diaper changing station for the umpteenth time this week.
But wait, what's that feeling? Your belly is tightening in a way it never has before. Is this it? Is this labor?! Don't worry, I've got you covered with my top 5 things to do during early labor!
1. Rest Up! 😴

Early labor is like the prelude to the grand symphony of childbirth. It can last anywhere from 6 to 12 hours (or even longer), so catching some Z's is essential! If it's nighttime, and a contraction wakes you up, take note of the time and try to go back to sleep. If sleep eludes you or it's daytime, consider some light reading, catching up on your favorite show, or checking in on your Minecraft dog 🐶 while you rest.
And don't forget about your partner or support team! Let them snooze, well-rested support is the best kind of help. If you need support though go ahead and wake them! It's also a good time to call or text your doula and let them know what's happening. They need a heads-up too! Make sure to talk with your doula so you know when they want you to contact them.
2. Nom Nom! 🍔🍎

Your body's about to embark on a marathon, so fuel up! Even if you don't feel like having a feast, grab some easy-to-eat snacks and keep them nearby. Hospital-bound? Eating before you go is crucial, as you might not get another chance until your baby's a few hours old. Hospitals often have rules about food intake during labor, so check with your providers for their policies.
These policies aren’t law nor are they evadanced based and you can choose to eat while at the hospital. That is your choice and they can not stop you. You will need to bring your own food as they will typically not provide you any even if requested. If you do choose to eat make sure to be honest with the staff and inform them accurately of when and what you last ate.
3. Stay Hydrated! 🥤💧

Just like athletes hydrate during their big games, you need to stay hydrated during labor. Sip on your favorite drink using a bendy straw to make it fun. And guess what? You can have a smoothie to combine both food and drink - multitasking like a pro!
While some hospitals restrict drinking during labor, others may allow it. Be sure to clarify with your healthcare team. If you can't drink hospital policies restrict drinking, you will typically be allowed to eat ice chips, or they'll likely provide IV fluids. Again policies are not law and just like eating, if you choose to drink be honest with your care team.
4. Shower Power! 🚿✨

Treat yourself to a warm, relaxing shower. Use that fancy soap you've been saving, lather on some lotion, and snap a pic of your beautiful bump. A shower feels fantastic, but it can also calm contractions (Baths calm labor even more). If contractions slow down or stop, don't panic; they'll pick up again if you're truly in labor. If they don’t start again they may have been Braxton Hicks and not early labor.
And if you're planning a home water birth, have your partner or support team check the hot water heater and turn it up a bit. You'll want plenty of hot water to fill the tub when the time comes. Just be cautious not to scald yourself or others!
5. Distract Yourself!📚🎬🧩

Remember, a watched pot never boils, and the same goes for early labor. Obsessing over contractions can make time drag. Instead, find something to distract yourself - read a book, watch movies or shows, or tackle that 4000-piece 3-D puzzle of Hogwarts you've been eyeing.
You can still keep track of contractions but don't stress over each one. They'll get closer together eventually; it's all progress! So, for now, enjoy your day and try to ignore them as long as possible. Your energy will be needed later!
Remember, if you think you're in labor, follow these steps: Rest, Eat and Drink, Take a Shower, and Distract yourself. Oh, and don't forget to give your doula a call—they need some time to prepare too! 📞🤗
